Nigerian Lotteries

In an effort to regulate the lottery business in Nigeria, the Nigerian government passed the National Lottery Act 2005. The Act established the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, which is charged with ensuring lotteries, including sports lotteries, are operated ethically, transparently and by companies that meet suitability requirements.

In December 2008, GTECH contracted with the National Sports Lottery to operate a national online lottery. In 2015, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission released licensing requirements for a sports lottery. However, in November 2024, the Supreme Court nullified the National Lottery Act 2005 and the National Lottery Amendment Act 2017, holding that regulation of lotteries and games of chance rests with state governments, which now issue their own lottery and betting licences and frameworks.
